Dayenu!™ Enough Silence
The Domestic Violence Initiative of The New York Board of Rabbis

___________________

Dayenu!™ Enough Silence, the domestic violence initiative of The New York Board of Rabbis focuses on:

  • Clergy Training
  • Community Awareness Programming
  • Congregational Policy and Planning
  • Linking Congregations, Service Providers, and Law Enforcement to Prevent DV and Assist Victims

Clergy Training

Recent studies show that victims of domestic violence often turn to clergy seeking support and assistance in making decisions about their safety and future. Dayenu!™ empowers religious leaders to address the issue of domestic violence in their congregations by dissecting the myths and stereotypes about domestic abuse that imprison families and make women, children, and men fearful for their lives. In its professional training programs, clergy learn to recognize signs of domestic violence; practice compassionate ways of assisting those living with violence at home; and become familiar with local resources including specialized social and legal services.

Dayenu!™ trains ordained clergy and seminary students and faith educators of all denominations. It prepares clergy of all faiths to work with victims in interfaith settings.

Since 2005, Dayenu!™ has:

  • Provided this vital education for 300+ clergy members
  • Developed the training for the NYC Family Justice Center’s Interfaith Spiritual Caregivers program

Community Awareness Programming

Dayenu!™ offers community education programs in support of clergy efforts in congregations, community centers, schools, and other settings. Topics include:

  • Healthy Relationships (teenagers and young adults)
  • Love Healthy: What to Look For (adults)
  • Family Violence in Jewish Homes (adults)

Dayenu!™ also:

  • Develops social justice projects, connecting congregations and community based organizations that aid victims of domestic violence.
  • Informs faith communities of local, state and federal legislation that affects the legal recourse of victims.

Congregational Policy and Planning

Every congregation knows what to do in case of a fire, but how many know what to do when there is a violation of a domestic violence order of protection on its property?

Dayenu!™ is committed to building safer communities one congregation at a time. In consultation with security professionals, Dayenu!™ works with congregational leadership to develop a domestic violence safety plan for the faith community’s facilities and grounds. The adoption and implementation of protocols are essential to protecting victims’ rights to safety and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. By adopting safety plans, congregations send a clear message to the entire community that abusive behaviors will not be tolerated or rewarded.

Linking Synagogues, Service Providers, and Law Enforcement to Prevent DV and Assist Victims

To best assist victims of domestic violence in navigating the complex system of social and legal services, clergy and congregations need to partner with local domestic violence service providers and law enforcement agencies in order.

Dayenu!™ is committed to:

  • Connecting every congregation with local advocates.
  • Facilitating relationships between clergy, lay leaders and advocates through joint educational programs and community events.
